What does Basic Life Support mean in Health & Safety?
In the UK, while it is not a strict legal requirement for all employees to receive BLS training, the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to ensure that appropriate first aid arrangements are in place. Depending on the workplace risk assessment, this may include providing staff with BLS training.
Key components of BLS include:
- Recognising cardiac arrest and calling emergency services (999)
- Performing chest compressions and rescue breaths (CPR)
- Safe use of an AED where available
- Managing choking and recovery positions
Employers in higher-risk environments (e.g. manufacturing, construction, healthcare) are strongly advised to ensure staff are BLS trained.
